For the second act of the inter-exhibition performance series Avalanche, the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève presents Also known as, a situation created by Julie Sas (1990, Paris), artist-in-residence at the Centre.

At the crossroads of installation, writing and performance, the artist’s work develops in frameworks mobilizing an approach using perceptual and language data as well as questioning the social space of art.

Also known as comes within the framework of research on the practice of anonymity and forms of invisibility in the political, artistic, literary and musical fields, as they provide the conditions for a renewed and radicalized approach to these disciplines, arising as forms of resistance to a double contemporary paradigm: one that claims to merge the image that one has of himself with its reflection towards others and the value of visibility.

Based on a set of written, audio and visual materials relating to this issue, collected and studied during the time of this residence at the Centre, Julie Sas presents a situation featuring individuals engaged in the citation of anonymous sources. A split, cryptic narrative is being built, through an act of disembodied and polyphonic speech, contributing to the implementation of a sort of “theory of darkness”, playing on the notions of appearance and disappearance.

Julie Sas (1990, Paris) lives and works between Geneva and Paris. A recent graduate of the HEAD-Geneva, Sas is currently in residence at the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève. Her work has been presented among others at Villa Bernasconi in Geneva (exhibition organized by the Mamco), Yvon Lambert Gallery, Salon Jeune Création 2013, and at Palais de Tokyo in Paris. She is also winner of the New Heads BNP Paribas Foundation Art Award 2015.
