Merce Cunningham & Charles Atlas
Torse

An event proposed by Ensemble Contrechamps

The Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève welcomes the Ensemble Contrechamps for one evening for the screening of Charles Atlas’ film Torse on Merce Cunningham’s eponymous choreography, with music by Maryanne Amacher. This screening is hosted on the occasion of Maryanne Amacher’s concert, organized by the Ensemble Contrechamps (Tuesday, May 7, 8pm, Studio Ernest-Ansermet), it will be accompanied by a lecture by Bill Dietz (in English).

The dance film Torse was produced in 1977 and took the form of a two-channel video. Conceived from the outset as an independent artistic work, the film extends the choreography of the same name, which Merce Cunningham created in 1976 and for which Maryanne Amacher wrote her composition Remainder. Torse was filmed and recorded at the University of Washington using three 16mm cameras, which provided various perspectives on this dance performance. It is one of the only existing documents retracing the entire work of Maryanne Amacher from that period.
