Angela Marzullo – Homeschooling

Angela Marzullo
Homeschooling

The Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève is happy to present a screening of four films from Angela Marzullo’s Homeschooling series at the Cinema Dynamo.

Education is central in Marzullo’s practice. The cycle of films Homeschooling has been initiated in 2005 and stars the artist’s two daughters. The films follow a rigorous educational path in which the private dimension of woman and mother encounters the research of a feminist artist. The eight films in the Homeschooling series can be seen as the artist’s ideal library of the sources of radical pedagogical and feminist concepts, representing contemporary counter-culture. Each video declares in a different way the obsolescence of patriarchal culture to theorize the liberation of women as subjects.

Taranta, 2009, 14 min
Taranta centres around the Apulian myth of the Tarantula bite, claiming that the spider’s bite causes a mental illness that can be relieved, and even cured, through music and dance.

Concettina, 2010, 10 min
Concettina is a video based on Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Lutheran Letters, and on its peda-gogical treatise ‘Gennariello’ in particular. This work tells of the uncertainty surrounding the life of two teenagers.

Education for Autonomy, 2015, 12 min
Through the links of a fence in a zoo, eyes and ears are riveted on a discussion between two adolescent girls: education, why? and for whom? The debate is based on Theodor Adorno’s and Helmut Backer’s theories. Will the solitary ibex, lying on the roof of his barn, find an answer to the problem of adaptation in the two girls’ discussion?

Let’s Spit on Hegel, 2015, 10 min
This feminist investigation deals with separatism in art. In maintaining that women should keep away from moments of masculine celebration, specifically in the art world, the protagonists renew Carla Lonzi’s 1970s feminist discourse, giving it more contemporary impulsion.

Angela Marzullo was born in 1971 in Zurich. She lives and works in Geneva. Her work combines photography, video and performance, exploring feminist issues, at the heart of her artistic preoccupations. With her alter ego, Makita, the artist takes on the role of the feminist intellectual, the witch, or the politically engaged mother of a woman.
