Jeremy Shaw
DMT

Jeremy Shaw (1977) is a Canadian artist based in Berlin. Shaw’s interests lie in the grey zone between science and mysticism. His video installations explore altered and psychedelic states, and the cultural and scientific theories that attempt to map these transcendental experiences. His approach is conceptual and includes a wide range of sources, from scientific research to music video.

In DMT (2004), Jeremy Shaw both formalizes and externalizes individual psychedelic experiences with talking-heads style videos of young subjects high on the hyper –hallucinogenic drug (DMT). Using overlapping time structures, one which shows the ‘actors’ in real time during the 15 minute high and one which recollects their experience immediately after the drug-trip in subtitles, Shaw conflates conceptual art strategies, performance and documentary with a text-based version of psychedelic art.

Jeremy Shaw lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include: Variation FQ, Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin, 2013; Transcendental Capacity, Macaulay Fine Art, Vancouver, 2013; Best Minds Part One (Expanded), MoMa/Ps1, New York, 2011.
